Where Is The Money Made In Home Based Business Opportunities?
It was a ridiculously long weekend, so this morning I turned off the alarm clock and decided to sleep in; Wake up naturally as opposed to the blaring of my alarm clock. Though I don’t make a habit of it, owning a home based business does have it’s perks.
Anyway, after I woke up and was all ready to start the day, I grabbed a cup of hot chocolate (with a touch of coffee in it) and began checking my messages. Again, normally I don’t check my messages until after I’ve done what needed to be done (I’ll explain that in a bit), however I wanted to catch up on the comings and goings over the weekend.
As I read through, I couldn’t help but notice the same people popping up all over the place yelling, “join me!” for just about every new thing anywhere in the field of home based business opportunities.
I’m sure you’re used to seeing it too – Facebook updates, twitter statuses and the like. Words and phrases like ground floor, new start up, just launched, and on and on. I couldn’t help but laugh because all of them, humorously claimed to be better than the other, the best, and the “end all be all” of home based business opportunities.
I thought to myself (after I laughed), “how sad. All of these people promoting so many home based business opportunities, and none of them are actually building any of them.” From my perspective, I’ve seen their ads and their profiles and posts and it seems like every week they’re promoting a new business opportunity.
Personally I can’t understand how anyone can be successful when they’re all over the place like that, but I had to ask myself, where is the money really made in home based business opportunities?
Is it building it, or joining it?
Now that people are paying for my time as a consultant, I would usually reserve this information for consulting, however if I can share some value with you, it would be this…
Finding The Money In Home Based Business Opportunities
Perspective: Most of the advertising out there around home based business opportunities are focused on getting others to join the business opportunity, obviously, however just because you advertise joining a business, that doesn’t mean you join every business opportunity you see!
Think about it… When you see advertising for an opportunity there is always a promise that if you if you work you’ll make money, and maybe they have other things in the way of tools and resources, but what benefits are there for you when you join a business opportunity?
Considering most decent programs cost money to join, (I’ve found very few free home based business opportunities that make substantial income), and programs that pay you to join are far and few in between, do you make your money by joining or by building?
The Excuses & What Your Focus SHOULD be
The answer should be obvious – you make your money by building and business, however focus on getting others to either buy product and services or join your business (team-building). Preferably both.
And before the critics out there start up, I’ve heard the excuses from more opportunity, diversification, creating multiple streams of income, and everything else you can think of, but the fact of the matter is, you can be involved in 100 different opportunities and not make a dime, and NONE of those excuses will put money in your bank account.
I’m not saying you shouldn’t build different business opportunities. I’m saying that your focus shouldn’t be joining opportunities, but building them.
I call them Income producing activities, and it’s something I had to be taught myself.
What are Income Producing Activies?
In order to explain that, you need to know the 3 Cs of Marketing. They are Create Traffic, Capture Leads, and Convert Sales – In short, income producing activities will lead to one of those three results.
Either what you’re doing will create traffic and have people checking out your products and services; entering their information in a form somewhere or reaching out to connect or be contacted; or they’ll be buying something.
If what you’re doing in your home based business opportunity isn’t resulting in one of those things, then you probably shouldn’t be doing them as a core focus in your business.
I’ve used this exercise before because it’s a great tool to help you focus on what needs to be done every day to find success.
Make a list of all of the things you do every day in relation to your home based business. After you’ve made a list, go down to each item and match it up against the 3 Cs of marketing.
If it doesn’t create, capture or convert, then you’re wasting a lot time on things that probably should be done in your spare time. If nothing on your list creates one of the three, then you need a whole new game plan.
But don’t worry, I won’t leave you hanging. Take a look at the information here to get a better idea of what you should be doing.
What’s My Focus?
You’ll remember earlier that I said I don’t usually check email and stuff until after I’ve done what I have to do business-wise? Here’s why (pay attention – this applies to you).
Everybody, myself included, only has so much energy they can put out everyday. Some have less, some have more, but at the end of the day, there’s only so much a person can do before their battery is empty.
That same exercise I gave you? I do that every day, and I don’t do anything else until those money-making activities are done. I do those first and nothing else – plain as that.
Like most people, I have SOS (Shiny Object Syndrome) and I will get distracted by every little thing that captures my attention, so I eliminate that possibility altogether. The side effect of that is that instead of having to “work” really long days to get a job done, I build my business in just a few hours per day, and how much money I make has increased because when I work, I’m not distracted.
