First off, I’m sorry that I haven’t posted in a while. It’s been a crazy week for me and we’ll leave it at that. (Yes I’m a guy that used a smilie – don’t judge!)
Secondly… yes you read that right. Video games helped me to be a better entrepreneur.
I was a video gamer from the moment I could hold a controller. It wasn’t Atari for me or the arcade though. It was the NES. Both were popular at the time but NES had what I was interested in – namely RPG’s.
I’ve never been a fan of first person shooters (until Halo that is), so I liked to play those epic role playing games like Final Fantasy, Crystalis and the ENTIRE Dragon Warrior series (then later on SNES, games like Cronotrigger and more).
I played so much in fact that I used to get in trouble. “It will ruin your brain,” is what I was told a lot.
… But what my parents (and others) didn’t realize is that when I said “they’re making me smarter,” it wasn’t just an excuse. when I wasn’t playing video games I found that everything was just slow to me.
I’m not sure what it’s like for everyone else, but when I wasn’t gaming everything seemed to be moving at a snail’s pace, and I found my mind wandering to find something to do.
I credit my motto “gaming for life” to my affinity for gaming, not just because it’s insanely fun and a great way to occupy my idle hands and mind, but also because looking back at the things that I do – music, programming, being an entrepreneur – I can see where video gaming has benefited me.
Thankfully, the rest of the world is starting to realize it too!
Critical thinking, teamwork, problem solving, multi-tasking, improved mental acuity, decision-making, and a lot more, were improved (at least for me) through video gaming.
These are all skills I use regularly as an entrepreneur – for example, being a guild master on World of Warcraft requires that I recruit members, build and manage teams, organize events, delegate tasks and much more – I do the exact same thing in my business.
And that’s just one example…

Video: Can video games make your kid smarter?
So, the next time you think your kids are playing too many video games – they probably are, but now you can put your mind at ease knowing that the skills they are learning will be something they will use in their adult lives. In fact, they may actually go on to be entrepreneurs like myself and others. It’s definitely “outside of the box” thinking.
