Social Media Marketing: Staying Out of Facebook Jail
A few months after joining Empower Network and Team Take Massive Action, there was a question asked in our team group, “Which single strategy has brought you the most leads and sales?”
There were a lot of responses, but the one strategy that showed up the most was the Social Media Marketing method for Facebook, which was part of our initial training in Team Take Massive Action to help new members generate consistent leads every day. It was free, easy to do, and inevitably abused.
It wasn’t too long after the method was taught that whole threads started popping up about accounts being closed, messaging capabilities being turned off, people being unable to send friend requests… The whole thing was a mess!
At first it was really frustrating that so many people were getting it wrong, even after the in-depth explanations and detail given in the video training, but in retrospect, you can’t really be surprised that people, most of whom have never done any marketing online before, would find themselves in Facebook jail.
It was learning curve for me too, using social media in such a unique way, but I did have a measure of success – my traffic was increasing, I was generating more leads, and sales were increasing. A lot of people began asking me how I’m doing so well and not getting into trouble, and I soon found myself spending most of my time training others on the “do’s and don’t’s” of social media marketing instead of building my business.
I really do have a desire to help others so I’ve decided to share, not just the strategy, but the mindset as to why I’m finding success, and with that under your belt, I hope you’ll be able to stay out of Facebook jail.
So you’ll get the mindset first, then you will watch the training after. The reason I’m doing it this way is because I believe that the reason most people get into trouble is that they get the “nuts and bolts, how-to” and they take action without the right mindset, and that’s a lot like jumping into a car and start barreling down the road 95 miles per hour without ever having learned how to drive one – bad things can happen.
Social Media Marketing: Staying Out of Facebook Jail
- Be Personal:One of the reasons why this strategy is so effective is because it’s personal. Remember you are trying to “connect” with people, so don’t copy & paste the same message to everyone. People need to see that you’re talking to them and their situation, so while the gist of the message is the same, each message should be unique.
- No Mass Invitations: This is more of a personal preference, but I don’t invite everyone I message. Certainly I like having a lot of friends, but do you really want 5,000 Facebook duds, or 5,000 Facebook active connections who like and share and buy? I’ve adopted a practice where I invite others to send me a friend request in the message I send, and I only invite people who message me back – invite only real people.
- Daily Activity: So this is the big thing that gets a lot of people in trouble and in Facebook jail. Don’t go crazy! All it takes to succeed with Social Media Marketing is contacting 20-30 people a day, but don’t rapid-fire contact 20-30 people in one shot! Spread it out during the day. Don’t schedule your messages so you have 5 every 60 minutes for example. Make your activity random and be consistent every day so your activity become normal daily activity.
- Don’t Sell: This is probably one of the more important ones. Remember that the objective is to start a conversation and connect with a person, not to sell them, so it’s best not to even mention any programs until you start talking about what each other does for work, or in case they actually ask “what do you do?”
Prime Example Of What NOT To Do:
A very good friend of mine, (he’s also the founder of our business group) explained it this way…
“You’re attending a network marketing meeting. Tons of people are there, meeting and greeting, shaking hands and exchanging information. Would you walk up to someone and start off with “HEY CHECK OUT MY PAGE. IT’s THE BEST THING EVER! YOU HAVE TO GET IN!” or “Hey I heard you say that you were in . If you’re in that you’ll like this one. It only takes a minute to sign up. You could make a lot of money!” or something similarly obnoxious?
Let’s face it, that isn’t just obnoxious it’s amateurish, right? Maybe even a little creepy. But that’s what a ton of people are doing every day online, and somehow they expect what doesn’t work in real life situations to be successful just because it is online.
If you really want to master social media marketing, especially this approach, and stay out of Facebook jail, then treat it as a face to face “conversation” and not an opportunity to pitch or sell.
Something to think about…
One of the reasons that most people go crazy is because the people they are learning from have that coveted “5,000 friends” and probably tons of subscribers, and after having spoken to many of the people I coach, reaching those numbers is something that’s always on their mind so here is a suggestion that will get you to your goal, and instead of just numbers, you’ll have 5,000 active people.
Be CONSISTENT And STOP Worrying About How Many Friends You Have: I know that’s probably not what you’re expecting, but that’s the key. If you were to contact people very day with a PS at the end of your message to send you a friend request, and you send invitations to those who respond, you will see daily increased activity and the amount of friends you have, (which actually looks better and works in your favor). Focus on creating relationships instead.
